Adding even more to the woes of the already embattled public of Phek district, activists of the armed underground group NSCN (K) are reported to have abducted two workers working on the two-lane SARDP road project in Phek district. Public organizations informed on Monday that the activists abducted two workers of the Prudhvi Company on January 11.
Leaders of the Chozuba Range Public Organization, Sekruzu Area Public Forum, Chokri Area Public Organization and the convener of the Village Council Chairmen Union met on January 13 where the abduction was discussed. The public organizations issued a press release on Monday denouncing the NSCN (K) cadres for the abduction.“For the past 4 to 5 years, the public have been facing untold hardship due to the suspension of construction works of the 2-land SARDP road-widening project and lack of maintenance of the Chakhabama-Zunheboto road by the contracting firm,” the press release stated. The statement was appended by the leaderships of the public organizations.
“Of late, the Maytas-Gayitri / Prudhvi Company had carried out road clearance and maintenance works and also resumed the works (GSB), which in fact require to be completed during the dry season before the onset of the Monsoon. However, much to the shock and umbrage of the public, two employees of the company have been abducted which led to complete stoppage of the ongoing works,” the organizations lamented.
The frontals of the Chozuba, Sekruzu and Chokri areas have made clear their anger at any acts of harassment, extortion, or abductions committed by the underground groups against the companies. The construction workers are working for the development and benefit of the people of the area, the organizations stated.
The organizations have demanded immediate release of the workers and without conditions.
