Chümoukedima will enforce a ban on single-use plastics from August 1, targeting bags, cutlery, banners and plastic bottles
DIMAPUR — The Chümoukedima district administration will begin enforcing a ban on single-use plastics (SUP) from August 1 as part of efforts to curb environmental pollution and promote sustainable waste management.
According to a DIPR update on Thursday, a three-week relaxation period was provided to allow traders and establishments to clear existing stock. With the grace period ending, the ban will now be enforced across the district.
The prohibited items include plastic carry bags; plastic cutlery such as plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws; thermocol products; polythene, nylon, PVC, polypropylene and polystyrene items; flex banners and posters used during government functions; plastic sticks used for balloons and flags; plastic trays; wrapping and packing films; PVC banners of less than 100 microns; and packaged drinking water bottles below 20 litres used during meetings, functions, seminars and for personal consumption.
The deputy commissioner has directed all heads of offices, area administrative officers, the Chümoukedima Town Council, the District Task Force and other authorities concerned to ensure strict implementation of the ban and undertake public awareness campaigns.
