Child trafficking awareness programme held

Dimapur, Aug. 8 (EMN): A one-day district level sensitisation programme on combating child trafficking was held on the occasion of ‘World Day against Human Trafficking’ at DC’s conference hall, Tuensang, on Monday.

According to a DIPR report, the campaign was organized by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in collaboration with State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Tuensang district administration.

Guest speaker of the programme, NCPCR consultant, Kapil Sharma, in his address said human trafficking is one of the fastest growing organized crimes next to drugs and weapons. He also dwelled on global scenario and statistics relating to human trafficking, child rights in India, rights of children as enshrined in the Constitution of India, human/ child trafficking constitutional and legal mechanism, vulnerable Indicators, digital era and trafficking network. 

Superintendent of Police Tuensang, Vishal Chauhan, said human trafficking is a vicious cycle and that the menace exists in every corner of the society. The SP underscored the importance of the programme through which the public can be sensitized and made aware of the severity of cases, the existence of corrective laws and acts, and the government’s initiatives to fight against human trafficking.

Chauhan also spoke on the prevalence of domestic child abuse in the society and said that while some cases are exposed but many go unreported.

DC Tuensang, Kumar Ramnikant, said human trafficking is a work of evil that can be controlled or stopped only when all the stakeholders are united and work in cooperation. The programme was chaired by DCPO Tuensang, Yanthriba Sangtam, the report stated.
