Chargers FC beat Telongjem FC 1-0 to enter 27th MDFA Trophy

MOKOKCHUNG — Chargers FC edged Telongjem FC 1-0 in the second semifinal of the 27th MDFA Trophy, held at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, on Thursday.

Illanger’s 84th-minute free kick sealed the victory and secured the Chargers a spot in the grand finale against Doyang Strikers.

The first half was marked by the Chargers’ dominance but missed opportunities. Limatongzuk squandered three chances — a pinpoint assist from Longkhai sent over the bar, a D-box effort mis-hit, and a header from a corner that went wide.

With 60% possession, the Chargers consistently breached Telongjem’s right flank but failed to convert. Telongjem’s Letkholun Khongsai and Bapen attempted to turn the tide, yet the Chargers’ defence held firm to ensure a goalless first half.

After the break, Telongjem introduced Meyisangba to strengthen their left flank, but Chargers maintained control. Longkhai’s powerful attempt was superbly saved by the Telongjem goalkeeper. A subsequent free kick from Longkhai deflected off the wall and led to an unproductive corner. Limatongzuk’s long-range shot drifted wide, while Telongjem brought on Relitong for Letkholun Khongsai. Meyisangba’s quick run set up a wall pass with Tarepnungsang, whose strike narrowly missed the target.

As the Chargers’ momentum waned, substitutions were made to inject fresh energy — Temsuyanger, Osen, and Imnatoshi were replaced by Ayimnukshi, Imlisanen, and Illanger. Telongjem responded with changes of their own, bringing in Kamsanglen and Tsalichem. A near-post attempt by Telongjem’s Vitoho Kiho missed narrowly before Kiho was booked for a foul on the edge of the D-box.

The breakthrough arrived in the 84th minute when Illanger fired a stunning free kick into the net, sparking celebrations among the Chargers supporters. Illanger, however, was later cautioned for a brief altercation following the goal. Telongjem made one final substitution, replacing Tarepnungsang with Lanusucha, but failed to find the equaliser.

Chargers FC will now face Doyang Strikers in the grand finale of the 27th MDFA Trophy at 1 pm on October 25. The closing ceremony will be attended by Lanuchuba, Dimapur Municipal Councillor and Longtok FC president, and president of NPF Youth Wing Dimapur Division as the guest of honour.
