Dimapur, Oct. 11 (EMN):
The chairman of National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, M Venkatesan, on Monday said that he would insist the state government to form State Commission and Finance Development Corporation and make the funds available for the same from the national development corporation.

On arriving in Dimapur, Venkatesan met the Safai Karamcharis (sanitation workers) and their union leaders along with Atokhe Aye, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Albert Ezung, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Administrator Albert Ezung and other officials at the DC office, Dimapur.

The chairman, who is visiting the state to review the implementation of "the Prohibition of Employment as manual Scavenger and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013", said that he had come to listen to the problems of the Safai Karamcharis in person as grievances differ from state to state.

“Whatever problems you are facing, you can share with me so that I can take it forward to the state government,” he said while informing that the commissions have the power to make an enquiry if the officers fail to report their grievances.

He advised them not to protest but share their problems with the commission, besides highlighting various benefits and schemes.

The workers shared at the meeting that they are offered health check up every three months at the DMC office.

Venkatesan went on to say that the Safai Karamcharis can reach him through the contact number or email address provided in the website to share their grievances or complain any time.

After the meeting, he told journalists that the sanitation workers did not share their grievances unlike in other states, and most of them said that they were satisfied, so “it makes me feel that they are hesitating to share their real concern”.

On the request of the workers about quarters for the workers, he said they will request the chief secretary to make special allotment for Safai Karamcharis.
