  • DIMAPUR — Marking a significant shift in the Indo-Naga political landscape, the NSCN-K (Ang Mai-Mülatonu) and the government of India (GoI) are said to have held constructive talks towards entering into a bilateral ceasefire.

  • A press release from the Naga group on Sunday informed that the most recent meeting, the fourth in a series at the ceasefire supervisory level, took place on March 27 in New Delhi and was led by Kughalu Mülatonu, general secretary of NSCN-K (Ang Mai-Mülatonu).

  • “Both parties are actively exploring ways to end armed conflicts in the region through concerted efforts. An understanding has been reached to hold the next meeting soon, preferably in a neutral third country, ideally in Asia.

  • “The chairman, vice chairman, and the general secretary are expected to join the representatives from the GoI to discuss bilateral issues and more,” it stated.

  • The group’s willingness to engage in a ceasefire with the GoI follows approaches made by Naga NGOs and various Indian agencies since 2023, signalling a growing desire for stability and reduced tensions.

  • “The Nagas across the voluntary Indo-Myanmar border are filled with expectations and are closely observing the current developments,” it added.

  • Also, the group asserted that it is the only organisation with top leaders from both India and Myanmar.

  • “Currently, it maintains a bilateral ceasefire with the Myanmar government in the Sagaing Region of the Naga Self-Administered Areas. This ceasefire is presumed to be a continuation of the one initiated by the late SS Khaplang in 2014. A similar agreement with the Indian side would not undermine the spirit of the 2001 framework,” it stated.

  • While it maintained that the possibility remains open for future meetings in India, the ongoing internal strife in Myanmar and the recent earthquake make the immediate travel of the NSCN's top three leaders uncertain.

  • “Nonetheless, when it comes to the bilateral ceasefire with the GoI, General Secretary Inno. Kughalu Mulatonu is expected to finalise the agreement, accompanied by other members. The chairman, vice chairman, and general secretary are likely to participate in political dialogue with either India or Myanmar in the future,” it asserted.
