Amit Shah says Centre is fencing the India-Myanmar border at INR 31,000 crore to curb infiltration and strengthen security.
KOHIMA — Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the Centre is fencing the 1,610-km India-Myanmar border at a cost of INR 31,000 crore, a move aimed at curbing illegal infiltration, cross-border crime and security threats along the frontier, including the 215-km stretch bordering Nagaland.
Addressing the Land Border Districts' Superintendents of Police Conference 2026 in New Delhi on July 9, Shah said that the fencing project is intended to prevent proxy war, illegal infiltration, radicalisation, narcotics trafficking, smuggling, drone-related threats, cybercrime, organised crime and demographic changes in border areas.
He informed that the government is developing a "Smart Border" security system and has increased investment in border infrastructure by 400%, adopting a scientific approach to strengthen border management.
Shah maintained the Centre was committed to making the country infiltration-free and preventing demographic changes caused by illegal migration, which he described as a major challenge in border districts.
He added that the government is replacing the traditional isolated border outpost system with an integrated security grid and urged officials to ensure that information on demographic changes in border areas reaches the highest levels without delay.
The Union minister also claimed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the country has largely overcome terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast and significantly reduced Left Wing Extremism. He added that the Centre aims to deal a decisive blow to narcotics trafficking over the next three years.
