Kohima, Oct. 8 (EMN): Vila Yiese Beauty Stop Salon of Kohima and Dimapur-based Keni Koza Glamour Touch Salon organised a seminar with the acclaimed Indian hairdresser Jawed Habib, at Eastgate Hotel on Tuesday in Kohima.
About 40 beauticians from Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung districts and from Assam attended the daylong seminar.

Habib explained the meaning and concept of haircut, perming and hair chemical science etc. He gave tips about managing salons.

Narender, a hair trainer from Delhi under the Jawed Habib brand demonstrated keratine treatment, shedding, straightening etc. on models using various techniques, and instructed by Habib.

All through the seminar, Habib reminded the participants to make sure that their clients come back to their salons with a smile and not with a complaint.

After the seminar, when asked why the hair plays an important role on the body, Habib said, “hair is a crown.”
“When we get up in the morning, the first thing we do is, we go to the mirror and we try to admire ourselves by looking at our hair. When you feel positive with a smiley in the morning, everything is done so well the rest of the day. So I call it a crown.”

Habib told Eastern Mirror that 20 years ago, Indian hairdressing was at the bottom line when compared with Singapore and Dubai.

However, according to him, today the country is on top in the field. Indian hairdressing industry has moved up while Dubai hairdressing industry have moved down,” he asserted.

The young generation have contributed and boosted the industry in India. “We have become big because our size is big and our generation is young,” he said.

To upcoming and aspiring hairdressers in Nagaland , Habib advised them to seek to know the basic science of the profession. He also gave a suggestion about how to maintain hair care: By “keeping the hair clean.”

Meanwhile, Vila Yiese and Keni Koza said the reason behind organising the seminar was to give an opportunity to beauticians to upgrade their knowledge and polish their skills in hairdressing with more advanced techniques.

“Some beauticians have their own families who could not find it convenient to go outside for training programmes while some beauticians have to opt for home studios due to unavailability of parlours and salons in the towns . So, we roped in an international hair dresser to brush up and equip their skills on hairdressing,” Yiese said.

Velütalü Puro, project manager and entrepreneur from YouthNet thanked Habib for taking the trouble to come and said it was a golden opportunity for beauticians in Nagaland to learn about new ways of hairdressing from such a noted and humble person.

About a century ago, Nazir Ahmed used to give haircuts to prominent personalities of the country. He was the official barber to the president of India. He used to cut the hair of Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India. In independent India, there were other luminaries like Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and other dignitaries who he serviced.

Conventionally, barbers would be male and beauticians, the female members of the society. A term like ‘hair styling’ was unheard of then.

The shackles of this norm going around in the society were loosened to a certain extent by Habib Ahmed, the pioneer of hairstyling in India. He was the hair stylist for the who’s who of India including Dr. A P J Kalam then.

A revolution was waiting to come in the form of the eldest grandson of Nazir Ahmed and son of Habib Ahmed, Jawed Habib.

Taking the 100 years old legacy forward, and awed by the working activities and inspiration received from his grandfather and father, Jawed Habib set his foot in the hair and beauty industry in 1988. He received formal training in hairstyling techniques from a famous school in London, Morris Masterclass.

During the past 35 years, Jawed Habib has set up a huge business empire which is already making difference in the lives of the hundreds of business associates, thousands of employees and millions of customers. He has set up 800 plus salons and training academies in 24 states and 110 cities across India.

The brand Jawed Habib is constantly gaining momentum as new brands and aesthetics get added to the business. He has managed the explosive growth through careful attention to customer satisfaction and quality assurance.

His skills, aesthetic sensitivity and solid expertise, helped him understand the needs of the growing Indian market.
