Captain Kenguruse MVC Football Tournament trophy unveiled

Kohima, Oct. 24 (EMN): The curtain raising programme for Capt. N Kenguruse, Maha Vir Chakra (posthumous) Nagaland Football Tournament-2019 was held at State Academy Hall, Kohima on Thursday, October 24.

The 5th edition of the state-level football tournament under the banner “Captain Kenguruse, MVC (posthumous) Football Tournament” will be held from October 29 to November 8 at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima.

Maj. Gen. PC Nair, YSM, IGAR (N), who graced the occasion as chief guest, recalled the heroic deeds of late Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, Maha Vir Chakra and said, “He made the supreme sacrifice at the icy heights of Drass in Jammu and Kashmir during the Kargil War; his name has become synonymous with bravery, courage, valour and love for the motherland.”

“His act of selflessness and intrepidity are symbolic of the centuries old tradition of Nagas who are known for their pluckiness and fearlessness,” he added.

Nair asserted that during a short span of five years, the tournament has become a showcase sporting event for Nagaland as is evidence by its popularity. He also expressed optimism that the tournament would create a platform for the players to take up football as not just a passion but a profession and urged the players to show true sportsmanship.

The trophy of the 5th edition of Capt. N Kenguruse Nagaland Football Tournament was unveiled by the chief guest and Kenguruse’s father.

Earlier, Capt. N Kenguruse’s parents lighted the lamp and a movie on the martyr’s act of valour was screened.

Khensa Students’ Union Kohima presented a folk fusion dance and song, Captain Kenguruse’s brothers’ band ‘Just formed’ presented ‘Heroes of War’ and a string ensemble by School of Music Kohima enthralled the gathering during the ceremony.

It may be mentioned that 24 teams, including defending champion Vanguard FC, Tseminyu will participate in the tournament.
