Candlelight service held in Peren; Nagaland Police file case

A case has been filed with the crime branch at Police Headquarters (PHQ); no one booked so far

Dimapur, March 24 (EMN): Peren Town Community organised a candlelight service at the main square of Peren town on Wednesday in honour of three persons — Itingwangbe Haikam, Hangyi and Asiambo – who were allegedly killed by armed assailants at Lamhainamdi village on March 22.

A moment of silence and prayer led by Pastor Amos, Secretary of Baptist Pastor Fellowship, Peren Town, was observed at the candlelight service, according to an update.

The president of Peren Town Women Welfare Organisation, Pelingrangle, led the service and President of Zeliangrong Mepui Organisation, Apeuna Iheilung delivered condolence message, expressing the pain that the people, especially mothers, experienced along the bereaved families.

Executive Secretary of Zeme Baptist Church Council, Rev. Izieteilung Terieng delivered ‘a message of hope’, an update informed. Asserting that “the truth will triumph”, he appealed to the community to take the side of truth and righteousness and encouraged them to take the stand of faith in this dark hour.

The mortal remains of the three victims were laid to rest at Lamhainamdi village on Tuesday.

Case filed against miscreants

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Peren, Vikato Thonger told Eastern Mirror that the incident has been taken by the Police Headquarters (PHQ) and a case filed with the crime branch.

“They (investigating team) visited the firing site today (Wednesday) and from the Jalukie thana, they have taken all the evidence that were recovered from the site,” he informed, adding that the investigators will examine all the witnesses who had escaped from the site of the incident, on Thursday.

The police officer informed that no one has been booked so far.

“This is not like a regular cases and so the team will examine witnesses as much as possible,” he said.

Home Minister of Nagaland had on Tuesday informed that the state government had taken cognisance of the issue and the police had set up a special investigation team (SIT) headed by a senior police officer to probe the incident.

Thonger informed that situation in Peren was ‘under control’ and “we have deployed enough forces in the surrounding area and armed personnel are doing duty round the clock”.

He went on to say that the Prohibitory Order under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 1973 that was clamped in the disputed area on Tuesday, was “indefinite” and that it will be lifted only after the deputy commissioner and commissioner of police of Dimapur assess the situation.
