The bank’s regional authorities met recently to discuss the ‘ways and means to increase credit to various sectors of the economy,’ a press release from the Bank on Saturday stated. On August 17, the regional office of Canara Bank at Guwahati conducted what the establishment said was the first stage of ‘bottom-up consultation process designed to generate ideas and review performance of banks and their alignment with national priorities.’ The press release read: “All the branches within the jurisdiction of the region were asked to review their performance themselves and deliberate on the issues before the banking sector and indicate on future strategy and the way forward.” “The meet focused on the ways and means to increase credit to various sectors of the economy, enhance use of technology to bring about innovation and make banking citizen-centric as well as more responsive to the needs and aspirations of senior citizens, farmers, small industrialists, entrepreneurs, youth, students and women.” According to Canara, the consultative process resulted in a ‘renewed sense of involvement and purpose down to the branch level.’ ‘The bank is geared towards implementing the roadmap for the future, to improve its performance and to align itself to national priorities so that it may fulfill its mandate of being active partner in the growth of the country,’ the statement read. Suggestions were collated and sent to the zone establishments for further discussions, along with comparative performance assessment of the branches in each region, the bank stated. Further, Canara stated, final consultations will be conducted at the national level to compare both intra and inter-bank performance, and to finalise the suggestions regarding the way ahead for implementation across PSBs.
