DIMAPUR — The Chakhro Angami Kuda Students’ Union (CAKSU) has extended support to the stance of the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) against the inclusion of non-Nagas as nominated councilors in the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).
In a press release, the CAKSU acknowledge the deliberations held during the first union assembly of the DNSU on Aug.10 and shared the concerns raised regarding the potential implications of such an inclusion.
“Our commitment to the preservation of Naga rights and traditions remains steadfast. Article 371(A) stands as a testament to the unique cultural and historical heritage of the Naga people, a heritage that must be protected and respected by all. The nomination of non-Nagas to decision- making positions within the DMC threatens to undermine the autonomy and identity of our communities, a prospect that we find deeply concerning,” the union said.
While recognising the need for expertise and knowledge in governance, the union maintained that these roles should be filled by qualified individuals from within the Naga communities, who understand and value the customs and traditions that have shaped Naga way of life.
“The Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, provides avenues for such representation, and we urge the state government to consider the sentiments of the Naga people when making appointments to the DMC,” the union said.
The CAKSU also appealed to the newly elected DMC members, the state government and all relevant stakeholders to prioritise the welfare and rights of the indigenous people of Nagaland.
“We advocate for a harmonious coexistence, built on mutual respect and understanding, and caution against any actions that may jeopardise this delicate balance,” it affirmed.
Further, the union also appealed to all non-Nagas to respect “our concerns and to refrain from interfering in the internal matters of the Naga people.”
“Our desire to live in peace and harmony with all communities should not be mistaken for willingness to compromise on issues that are fundamental to our identity and autonomy,” it added.
