DIMAPUR — The district management unit of FOCUS, Longleng, organised a one-day training for community animal health workers (CAHW) appointed under the project at the Veterinary Hospital, Longleng-Changtongya, on Tuesday.

The training was conducted in collaboration with the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Longleng.

Speaking on the occasion, the resource person, Dr. Aoyimsen Jamir, veterinary surgeon, stated that the CAHWs, as the livestock in charge of the villages, can act as a bridge between the livestock farmers and the department.

He added that they will be a valuable asset to the department at a time when almost every village has reported an outbreak of African swine fever in piglets, lumpy diseases in cattle, and local chicken mortality.

The main goal of the CAHW training was to ensure that at least some basic information and knowledge on veterinary services are made available to the CAHW so that they can provide first aid within the village itself in the event of an outbreak.

The resource person also demonstrated how to properly vaccinate livestock.

The participants were also given free medicine and manuals/brochures on ‘care and management of pigs’, ‘African swine fever’, and ‘handbook on dairy and poultry farming’.
