Business Association of Nagas proposes centralised tax collection system
Dimapur, Sep. 17 (EMN): Even as the citizens of Dimapur have taken it upon themselves to check the menace of ‘illegal collections’ from transporters at various check-gates, the Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has come up with certain proposals for the government to tackle it.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the association asserted that streamlining of taxation system is necessary for development and overall growth of the state’s economy. “Currently there are many taxes levied by departments at various checkpoints. Keeping in mind GST norms one wonders if collection of some of these taxes is legal. Moreover, a major part of these collections do not reach the state’s exchequer.
“Goods-carrying vehicles stopped at various points not only encourage multiple taxation for the same commodity but also make it convenient for various unscrupulous individuals and organisations to levy taxes,” read the statement.
The association suggested the government to authorise a particular department or an agency to collect the legal taxes on behalf of various departments.
Additionally, it stated, developing a centralised tax collection system with online payment facility will not only streamline taxation and ensure that taxes collected reaches the exchequer but also drastically eliminate unnecessary and multiple taxation by various departments.
“Further it will discourage unwanted organisations and associations from collecting taxes,” it added.
