Bureaucrats trained on disaster management at Kohima

EMN Dimapur, September 14 For the first time in Nagaland, a Training of Trainers (TOT) program on “Disaster Safe Hill Area Development” was held at Administrative Training Institute, Kohima. The program was sponsored by National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi. The resource persons for the training were Dr. Surya Parkash, Associate Professor, National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi, Dr. Hovithal N.Sothu, State Coordinator, ATI, Er.N.Moa Longkumer, Lecturer (Computer) ATI, Er. Keneizhatuo Kuotsu, Dr.Thingtimla, Medical Officer, Central Training Institute, Tuluvi Dimapur, and Deepak Lama, Pharmacist, CTI, Tuluvi, Dimapur. The topics shared and discussed in the programme were Disaster Risk Reduction in the Hills; Landslides, its impact and solutions; Earthquakes; Earthquake hazard zonation mapping, Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction; Post Disaster Medical Aid; Mainstreaming of DRR into Development activities; practical first aid and a full day fieldwork. 27 officers from different departments including Nagaland University and administration attended the 5 days training from September 8. For field visit, the participants were taken out for a full day to study the hazards, risks and vulnerable faces of Phesama Village and Kisama, the popular Hornbill festival site. Useful recommendations have been worked out by the trainees and the faculty to help reduce disasters in the areas, which will be given to the concerned authorities for future action. The participants thanked the NIDM, New Delhi for sponsoring this programme and the Administrative Training Institute, Nagaland for making it possible to make Nagaland, a safer place to live in. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Hovithal Sothu, State Coordinator, ATI.
