WOKHA — The office of the chief veterinary officer (CVO), Wokha, under the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, conducted a one-day bovine fertility camp at Bailey Baptist College, Wokha, on September 14.
The event was organised under the farmers’ awareness programme RGM 2022-23.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. E Mhonlumi Lotha, deputy director of AH&VS, spoke on “Alternative livelihood by exploring animal husbandry shelter.” She presented a statistical report on the annual demand for pork in Nagaland which was estimated to be about 60,000 metric tons, while its production was about 30,000 metric tons only.
To alleviate the demand-supply mismatch for pork meat, she encouraged the participants to emphasise pig rearing and farming.
Dr. Yanben Kikon, VAS farm manager at pig breeding farm, Wokha, spoke on “Economic sustenance through pig rearing.” He imparted training on scientific pig farming including breed selection, advantages of artificial insemination for more productivity, pigsty management, disease management, adopting cost-effective means by feeding through unconventional feeds, waste management, disease management and the basic requirements to rear pigs successfully.
He also spoke on the income opportunities and value-added products through pig farming.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Apeni Lotha, governing body president of Bailey Baptist College.
The programme was followed by an interactive session and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Yanpothung Ezung, head of Sociology department at Bailey Baptist College.
