Dimapur, May 15 (EMN):
A book titled ‘Women in socio-economic and cultural aspects of Nagaland,’ edited by Eneingulo-u Lasuh, was released on online by Rozelle Mero, founder and managing director of The People Channel, on May 15.
On the occasion, Mero stated that women should be recognised at all levels to enable the society progress at an optimum level. She encouraged putting the cultures and traditions of different tribes into writings, saying that documenting is extremely important as oral tradition could be skewed but written records cannot be. She also said that when women are empowered through education and businesses and are allowed to step out of their comfort zones or control zones, they blossom.

“Often women do things much better because men just see the big picture but women get into find details and a painting is not complete until the detailing are done by women,” Mero said.

She assured that the book would be a benchmark to discuss things further academically as well. She expressed hope that the book would not only be used in universities for academics but also in the church platform.

She congratulated Eneingulo-u Lasuh for the bringing out a very important and relevant book for our society.

In her introductory speech, editor of the book Eneingulo-u Lasuh said that the book discusses various features such as social status, economic development and cultural aspects.

Stating that women’s contribution has not been adequately acknowledged for a long time in the history of human progress, she however stated that it should not imply the lesser role of women in the development of human progress. She added that the grave disparity between the genders in the socio-economic as well as several aspects that link to traditional and patriarchal attitude is discussed in the book.

While women are regarded and treated well in some aspects, she stated that women are also undermined and equal status has not been given such as denial of leadership, lesser wages etc.

“Despite the advent of Christianity and western education, our society is still struggling to generate an equal platform,” Lasuh said.

She opined that gender issues and concern should be included in the curriculum and be accorded due importance in the formal educational set up. In this regard. She quoted statement of the former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who once said, “To awaken the people it is the woman who must be awakened, once she is on the move, the family moves, the village moves and the nation moves.”

Lasuh has acknowledged the contributions of Peteneinuo Angami, Dr. Inzule Zeliang, Dr. Yelhi Vero, Bokali Kibami, Kevinino Mechieo, Aghatoli Sema, Dr. Vizolenuo Sophie and Dr. Keneisenuo Solo.

Eneingulo-u Lasuh is the vice principal at Eastern Christian College, Padumpukhuri, Dimapur. She did her post-graduation in English Literature from University of Pune, Maharashtra.

The online book release programme, which was first of its kind in the state was chaired by Shuiching Konyak, assistant professor of English from Dimapur Government College, while the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Rev. Bonny Resü, lead pastor of Chakhesang Baptist Church, Dimapur.

The book will be available at Modern Book Depot, Books and Books at Dimapur and Academic Book House at Kohima and online on Ilandlo.
