Celebrated author Ruskin Bond was gifted a broom specially made by the students of Moran Blind School in Assam. Fascinated by the idea of Clean India, the author pledged his support to Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.
Famous actor Victor Banerjee personally carried and handed over this special broom to the famous storyteller at the latter’s residence in Mussoorie.
“Mr. Ruskin Bond wholeheartedly embraced the idea and immediately set about using it in inimitable good humour and got down to brushing cobwebs off the shelves and fallen tree leaves on his terrace. Children all over India would love to know that he cares for cleaner world and environment,” Banerjee told The Hindu from Mussoorie.
Banerjee has been running Moran Blind School at Moranhat in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh District, which has more than 60 boys and girls on the rolls. It was his father the late Major S.N. Banerjee who started this school in 1971.
“Our children have been creating bamboo craft for over two years now. We offer free education with free board and lodging and our three candidates for matriculation examinations last year all got first division. We serve nonvegetarian meals four days a week and Chinese meals twice a month when our children have great fun and love spouting Chinese words and phrases on those days,” said the veteran actor and philanthropist.
Banerjee said that apart from the Magor Educational Trust, Oil India Limited and the Assam Branch of Indian Tea Association several private donors from all over India and abroad have been extending their helping hands to provide better education and better care to the children of the school.
