Dimapur, December 5

Dimapur police have arrested from Tuensang town a man the authorities said impersonated an underground activist to extort and threaten a businessman in Dimapur. Not surprisingly again for the local judiciary and courts in Nagaland, the man was again found to be on bail from another case, a case of extortion.
The Dimapur police have arrested one Hekato Chophy alias Khekato Chophy of Litsami village and a resident of Doyapur in Dimapur. The person was arrested from Tuensang town in a case related to criminal intimidation and threat meted out to a prominent local businessman of Dimapur, the Dimapur police stated in a press release issued to the media on Friday, December 4.
The accused is to be detained under the National Security Act (NSA) to prevent him from further activities, the police said.
“The case relates to an incident where the accused person in the guise of another person belonging to a certain (Naga political group) made calls to a local businessman seeking financial assistance and threatened his life and that of his family,’ the police said.
“The harassments caused great mental trauma to the businessman and his family. Various business organizations including tribal bodies were alarmed by the incident and had pressed upon the police for action.”
After necessary investigation, the authorities traced the accused person to Tuensang, ascertained his whereabouts and dispatched a special team of enforcement personnel to arrest Hekato Chophy alias Khekato Chophy, the police said.
“The accused was found to have been impersonating a certain functionary of the NPG and was also found to have been arrested earlier on charges of extortion. He was out on bail from judicial custody up until he was arrested again for his involvement in the instance case,” the police stated.
“The accused is proposed to be detained under the National Security Act (NSA) to prevent him from further activities detrimental to the peace and security of the state.”
