BJP tops political donations in FY 2023-2024 — ADR Report

  • KOHIMA — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received the highest donations among the national political parties in the FY 2023-2024, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

  • The report, ‘Analysis of donations received by National Political Parties - FY 2023-24,’ released by the ADR is an analysis of donations received above INR 20,000 by national political parties.

  • A total of INR 2243.947 crore from 8,358 donations was declared by the BJP, receiving the highest donations. This is followed by INR 281.48 crore from 1994 donations declared by INC. The AAP declared receiving INR 11.062 crore, the CPI (M) INR 7.641 crore, and the NPEP INR 0.148 crore.

  • The BSP declared that the party did not receive any donation above INR 20,000 during FY 2023-24, consistent with its declarations for the past 18 years, the report stated.

  • In the states-wise donations received by the national parties for the FY 24, it showed that Nagaland contributed a total of INR 0.0185 crore to two out of five national political parties.

  • The two national parties which received donations from Nagaland were the BJP with INR 0.015 crore (INR 1.50 lakh) and NPEP with INR 0.0035 crore (INR 35,000); the INR 1.50 lakh was donated by an individual while the INR 35,000 donation was made by corporate/business.

  • Donation to the NPEP was made by Homelite from Dimapur. However, there was no mention as to the individual who donated to the BJP.

  • The report further indicated that zero contribution was made by Nagaland to the three national parties including the Indian National Congress, CPI (M), and AAP.

  • The report was compiled as per details submitted by the parties to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

  • The National parties include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M) and National People’s Party (NPEP).

  • From the total donations, 3755 donations to the National parties were made by corporate/business sectors amounting to INR 2262.5537 crore (88.9271% of total donations) while 8493 individuals donated INR 270.872 cr (10.6463% of total donations) to the parties during FY 2023-24.

  • A huge chunk of 3478 donations from corporate/business sectors were made to BJP (INR 2064.58 crore) while 4628 individuals donated INR 169.126 crore during FY 2023-24.

  • The INC received a total of INR 190.3263 crore via 102 donations from corporate/business sectors and INR 90.899 cr orevia 1882 individual donors during FY 2023-24.

  • All the contributions for NPEP came from the North Eastern states.
