DIMAPUR — Following the recent success of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in the urban local body (ULB) elections in Nagaland, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a member of the ruling alliance, has staked its claim for key positions within the newly elected bodies.

The BJP, which is in alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in the state, requested that the deputy chairperson positions in ULBs be allocated to its members in areas where both parties contested the elections together.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the BJP Legislature Party stated that “this step will contribute to maintaining and enhancing the strength of the PDA alliance.”

Furthermore, the BJP has also appealed for the accommodation of government nominees from their party to the respective municipal and town councils. The party urged for these appointments to be made in consultation with elected representatives from respective areas to prevent any misunderstandings between the alliance partners.

As per the release, these requests were formalised during a BJP Legislature Party meeting held on July 6 at Hotel Japfu in Kohima. During the meeting, the party congratulated Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who also leads the PDA, for the successful conduct of the ULB elections, stating that the alliance had been further strengthened under his leadership following the recent municipal and town council elections.

“We firmly believe that the esteemed authority and leadership of the Chief Minister will respond positively to these requests, upholding the true spirit of the PDA alliance,” it added.
