DIMAPUR —The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland state unit has expressed shock at the tragic loss of six lives and the damage to several vehicles and houses on the night of September 3, caused by a thunderstorm and cloudburst that led to a landslide in Pherima along the National Highway 29.

In a press note issued by the state president of the party, Benjamin Yepthomi, he expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Yepthomi, meanwhile, lauded Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for convening a ‘high level committee meeting’ on September 4, which was attended by deputy chief ministers Y Patton and TR Zeliang (minister-in-charge of National Highway) and all concerned officials and agencies to assess the situation.

“I sincerely thank the authorities for announcing ex-gratia to the families of the deceased and financial assistance to the injured persons,” it read, adding that the prompt action of the Pherima village youth, police personnel, and disaster response forces in retrieving the bodies of the deceased and assisting those affected truly demonstrated the passion of the human spirit in times of crisis.

He also appealed to the implementing agency, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, to take immediate rectification measures, including the deployment of the latest technology and proper machinery, to prevent such unfortunate disasters and calamities in the future.
