- Kohima Diocese to observe day of mourning on Tuesday
- DIMAPUR — As the
death of Pope Francis prompted an outpouring of grief and reflection on his
profound impact on the Church and the world, the Bishop of Kohima, Most Rev.
Dr. James Thoppil, recalled a life dedicated to championing the cause of the
poor and of the marginalised and urging global compassion, justice, and
environmental stewardship.
- “His vision to transform the Church into a synodal community,
one that listens, discerns, journeys together and embraces inclusivity, has
left an indelible mark on the Church at all levels. His profound compassion for
the poor and for those on the peripheries, especially migrants and refugees,
gained recognition worldwide.

- “His tireless efforts in peacebuilding and fostering
dialogue between nations will always be remembered. His outstanding commitment
to interreligious dialogue remains praiseworthy and exemplary. His call to care
for Mother Earth, through Laudato Si, was highly appreciated and sparked a
global movement,” the bishop stated in a message.
- According to him, further details regarding the funeral
arrangements are awaited from Rome. Additional information regarding the
diocesan observance and tributes to Pope Francis will be announced soon, he
added.
- “As a mark of respect to the late pontiff, all the Catholic
institutions in the Diocese of Kohima will observe tomorrow (Tuesday, 22nd
April, 2025) as a special day of mourning, conduct a condolence service and
remain closed,” he informed.
