Manipur Chief Minister, N Biren Singh today, chaired a review meeting of the verification drives for identification of illegal immigrants in border areas particularly in five districts, which share the international border with Myanmar.
The five districts are Chandel, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Kamjong and Pherzawl.
Sharing the photographs of the meeting which was attended senior state officials, deputy commissioners, SPs of the five districts in a tweet on Thursday, Biren Singh wrote, “Chaired a review meeting of the verification drives undertaken in 5 districts - Chandel, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Kamjong and Pherzawl for identification of illegal immigrants today. We have to protect our indigenous people from the influx of illegal immigrants. Their entry will be prevented once all the 34 police outposts along the border are completed.”
Replying to a question by opposition Congress MLA, Kangujam Ranjit Singh, on February 24 at the ongoing budget session, Biren Singh said altogether, 393 Myanmar nationals were apprehended in the state from January 1, 2012, till date.
He also informed about the present status of setting up of 34 police outposts in the border area.
Manipur shares 398 km long international border with Myanmar.
On February 5 this year, Manipur police arrested 10 Myanmar nationals during search operations in Churachandpur district which borders Myanmar for illegally entering and taking shelter in Manipur.
It may also be mentioned here that 80 Myanmar nationals were also detained for illegally entering the state from a place located between Lhangcham and T Motha village near the Indo-Myanmar international border under Moreh police station on January 26 this year.
