Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange confirmed for Spider-Man 3
Dimapur, Oct. 9 (EMN): Things are about to get stranger for the upcoming Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland. Benedict Cumberbatch will resume his role as the sorcerer supreme in the new Spider-Man 3 film according to an exclusive by The Hollywood Reporter.
Doctor Strange will play in a mentor role following the footsteps of his previous MCU mates, Tony Stark and Nick Fury. Doctor Strange and Spider-Man previously had a hilarious encounter with each other back in the Avengers: Infinity War movie where Parker responds, “Oh, you’re using your made-up names?” when Doctor Strange says his name.
The inclusion of Doctor Strange in the Spider-Man saga curiously fuels more speculation about Marvel potentially trying to build towards a spider-verse storyline, where different Spider-Man universes collide and crossover. The theory was already blowing up in Marvel fan circles after it was announced that Jamie Foxx would return to the new Spider-Man film as the villain Electro. Foxx played the character in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. However, Foxx’s Electro will apparently look a bit different from his previous iteration.
The animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse showed how different Spider-Men from different universes crossing over could be a recipe for success. Is Marvel/Sony Pictures bringing the same formula to the live-action Spider-Man franchise? Well, the inclusion of Doctor Strange with his ability to traverse the Multiverse would seem to be very convenient indeed to set up exactly that.
Imagine Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in the same movie fighting to save the Multiverse? This may be a bit too far-fetched but if it does happen wouldn’t that be a sight to behold?
Back to reality, the new Spider-Man is scheduled to start filming this year and it is confirmed that it will be directed by Jon Watts, the director behind both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
