Bear conservation workshop underway in Dimapur

Officials of IUCN-Bear Specialist Group and Nagaland Forest Department with frontal staffs on the first day of workshop at Forest Office Complex in Dimapur.

Dimapur, May 4 (EMN): Two-day capacity building workshop on bear conservation for frontline staffs consisting of forest rangers, deputy rangers, foresters and forest guards is underway at the conference hall of Forest Office Complex, Dimapur. The workshop is being jointly organized by IUCN-Bear Specialist Group and Nagaland Forest Department.
Speaking as a chief guest, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force, Nagaland, I. Panger Jamir, IFS, laid emphasis on the need of systematic study, identification, restoration of bear habitation, education and awareness among children and youth for bear conservation, radio collaring of a bear and releasing it in Intanki National Park for study or research purpose.Chief Wildlife Warden and chairman of the programme, Satya Prakash Tripathi, IFS, highlighted the distribution of different species of bears in the State and appealed the frontline staffs to be in close contact with individuals and communities for protection of bears in particular and wildlife in general.
Dr. Nishith Dharaiya, Co-chairman IUCN, Sloth Bear Expert Team and Associate Professor, Department of Life Science, HNG University, Patan, Gujarat, stated the function of different expert groups of endangered species identified by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He also gave background of this training workshop on bear conservation.
Wildlife SOS, USA, Thomas, in his address, stressed the need of conserving different species of bears in North-Eastern Region.
Director of Intanki National Park, Heuneilung, proposed vote of thanks.
