Dimapur, August 16
The final year students of Kohima Law College led by its teacher Kezhokhoto Savi had conducted legal rights awareness campaign at the School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, on August 12.
In a packed auditorium attended by all students led by the students’ council and the teaching faculty, the program was chaired by the Dean Prof. Alemla. Topics covered included impact of RTI in Nagaland, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, rights of the differently abled persons, sanitation, consumer rights, human rights, legal services authority – free legal aid to the poor, environment, state consumer helpline with Toll Free No. 1800 – 345 – 3701 and Lokayukta.
Addressing the gathering, team leader Kezhokhoto Savi said the State government was yet to take any effective measures/ actions against the backdoor appointments in several departments such as Home (Police), Medical, SCERT, RD, etc despite exposing the wrong doing of the concerned appointing authority.“When the State government fails to ensure ‘Right is Right and ‘Wrong is Wrong’ it is just encouraging more corrupt practices leading to an inequality where the richer will become more rich and the poorer will become more poor and the object of the Welfare State suppose to achieve equality and justice amongst the citizens terribly fails,” Savi said.
Besides backdoor appointments, he said there are several other corrupt practices in the state of Nagaland such as diversion and misappropriation of public funds meant for development in human, infrastructural, health, education, etc bringing huge deficit, bad roads, etc. He alleged that a good percentage of public funds meant for development are going into certain corrupt individual development, buying expensive vehicles and uses by the officer in the department who is not entitled.
Stating that the state is in dire need of powerful and effective lokayukta, he said the State government must not come up with a nominal and powerless Lokayukta.
Earlier on the day, the team submitted an NVCO representation to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema, along with NVCO book which was a compilation of government order and high Court order in stopping/ banning any collection of cash in the check-gates and on any highways.
