Dimapur, June 9 (EMN): Under ‘Greener Longjang’ project, Amenty Welfare and Educational Society (AWES), in collaboration with the youth ministry of Longjang Baptist Church, planted more than 500 tree saplings in Longjang village on June 5 to help the area regain its green cover. The saplings were provided by the office of the divisional forest officer, Mokokchung.
A press release from AWES stated that Rev. S Moa Aier, chairman of Longjang village council, and president of Longjang Students’ Union (LSU) spoke during a formal programme held at Rev. Yaongsangba Memorial Hall. Moalemla Y, AWES secretary, delivered the vote of thanks.
It stated that Imdongshilu Ao, AWES director, has stressed the importance of tree plantation and maintenance of plants. He explained the benefits of planting trees ranging from health to environmental impact, economics and even psychological effects.
Imdongshilu also emphasised reducing waste, reducing e-waste, saving water, and saving energy and encouraged the community to say no to single-use plastic and to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Rev. S Moa Aier, work supervisor of ABAM, said, “Nature is the greatest gift of God to mankind and therefore we should plant trees to protect nature.” He added that even if one has wealth and good health but fails to protect nature, everything would be destroyed. He, therefore, encouraged the community to plant more trees and preserve them in order to increase green cover as it helps to reduce air pollution and improve air quality.
The village council chairman also stated that the project would help to promote community involvement in environmental conservation efforts. To ensure the sustainability of the project, he recommended continuous monitoring of the growth and health of the planted trees and conduct regular maintenance activities such as pruning and watering.
The president of Longjang Students’ Union appealed to all the citizens to stop the felling of trees and to protect the ecosystem. He also encouraged every villager to plant at least ten trees if they cut one tree. He further urged the village community to take responsibility for preserving and conserving the planted trees.
