Awareness programme on human rights held at Nagaland University

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) organised an awareness programme on human rights and the role of Human Rights Commission, in collaboration with Nagaland University, at Ihoshe Kinnimi hall, Nagaland University, Lumami, on Thursday.

The team, which is currently touring Wokha and Mokokchung districts, is spreading awareness on human rights by visiting government schools, hospitals, health centres, jails and police stations, as well as interact with stakeholders and community leaders, an update informed.

The team is led by chairperson of NSHRC Justice Songkhupchung Serto.

During the visit, the team elaborates and details the functions of the commission including intervening in proceedings involving any allegation of violation of human rights pending before a court, with the approval of such court.

The team will also review the safeguard provided by the Constitution or any law in force, for the protection of human rights and undertake and promote research in the field of human rights.

Further, the commission aims to spread human rights literacy among various sections of society and promote awareness on the safeguard available for the protection of these rights through publications, media and other available sources. 

Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Prof. H John Sema, department of Political Science, followed by the vote of thanks by Registrar, Nagaland University, Dr. Abemo. The team later visited Government Primary School, Lumami and health and wellness centres.
