Awards given in the name of freedom fighters of Northeast

Dimapur, March 17 (EMN): The governor of Nagaland PB Acharya gave away awards during a ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, in New Delhi ‘in honour of freedom fighters of Northeast India.’

The public relations officer for Nagaland House at New Delhi issued a press release on Sunday informing about the programme.

The event was organized by the Special Centre for the Study of North East India at the JNU, the press release stated. The competition for the awards was based on M.Phil and Ph.D research being carried out by students of JNU concerning various issues and problems of the region, the press release stated. The five awardees were Aditya Bordalai, Gaithoilu Gangmei, Md. Chingiz Khan, Munmi Pathak and Sikha Dutta. The awards were given in honour of U Tirot Sing of Meghalaya, Rani Gaidinliu of Nagaland, Bir Tikendrajit Singh of Manipur, Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi of Assam and Pasaltha Khuangchera of Mizoram, in that order, the updates stated.

According to the press release, Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar, vice chancellor of the JNU was instrumental in establishing the centre. Stating that such a programme was the first of its kind at JNU, he expressed the need to promote and encourage multidisciplinary research on the Northeast region, the press release stated.

It was informed that five awards will be given every year in honour of ‘freedom fighters of the states of Northeast India’ in rotation.

In his address, Governor Acharya was stated to have explained that the letters to ‘Namaste’ stands for ‘North’ or Nagaland, A  for Assam, M for Manipur/Mizoram/Meghalaya; again an A for Arunachal Pradesh, S for Sikkim, T for Tripura, and E for East.

He remarked that the award was a way to encourage and inculcate a competitive spirit among students working on issues concerning the Northeast, the press release stated.

“It recognizes the students who have not only excelled in their academic pursuits but also developed all round skills and attained remarkable achievements in the domain they have a strong passion for,” the updates stated.
