ATMA Kuhuboto organises skill training for rural youth on oyster mushroom cultivation.

DIMAPUR — With an aim to promote sustainable livelihood opportunities among rural youth, the Agricultural Technology and Management Authority (ATMA) of Kuhuboto block under Niuland district organised a 25-day skill training of rural youth (STRY) programme on “Oyster mushroom cultivation as a self-employment venture” from February 13 to March 9.
An update from that the training was focused on providing practical and scientific knowledge on oyster mushroom cultivation, which is considered a viable enterprise due to its low investment requirement, short production cycle and suitability to local climatic conditions.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Sosang Longkumer, director and founder of Konger AgriTech, Dimapur, who delivered technical sessions on substrate preparation, spawning techniques, contamination management, crop maintenance and the economic prospects of mushroom cultivation.
Technical support was also provided by Dr. Ashwini Ananda, scientist of AICRP– Vegetable Crops at SAS Nagaland.

The training began with an orientation session on the nutritional and economic importance of mushrooms, followed by practical demonstrations at Konger AgriTech, Dimapur, on substrate preparation, sterilisation, bag filling, spawning, and hygiene management.
A do-it-yourself (DIY) field practical session was also conducted at S Hotovi village, where participants received hands-on experience in mushroom cultivation techniques.
A key feature of the programme was the home-based practical approach, where participants carried out cultivation activities in their respective homes and villages. It stated that approach enabled them to gain real-time experience in substrate preparation, spawning, incubation management, and monitoring of mycelial growth with continuous technical guidance from the resource persons and ATMA officials.
The programme was coordinated by the deputy project director (DPD), Avitoli K Yeptho; block technology manager (BTM), Akavi Holo; while Kaiho Achumi and Mlato Swu (ATM) provided necessary field support and facilitation throughout the training programme.
A total of 10 participants from the block attended the programme.
