ATMA conducts demonstrations on spraying method, winter crops

Henok Phom demonstrates the handling of a knapsack sprayer at Zani Village, Chümoukedima.

DIMAPUR — ATMA Chümoukedima block held a demonstration programme on ‘safe handling of spraying equipment’ on August 24 at Zani village.

Henok Phom, ATM, Chümoukedima block, led the demonstration, in which he taught participants about safety measures when using a knapsack sprayer as well as accurate insecticide dosage and spraying times. He also demonstrated an effective spraying method in a low-land rice field, in which farm women actively participated.

On the same day, another demonstration was held at Bamunpukhuri village on the preparation of nursery beds for raising winter vegetable crops. Keneisanuo Keditsu, ATM, Chümoukedima block, led the demonstration.

She stated on the occasion that vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, and other small-seeded vegetables should be grown in a nursery bed before being transplanted in the fields, and that transplanted seedlings provide uniform growth and higher market value.

During the event, the farm women were also given various winter vegetable seeds and gardening tools.

Naga United Village: On August 26, the ATMA Chümoukedima block also held a demonstration and training at Naga United village.

According to a press release from the block, Makhila Chang, master trainer and farm owner, carried out a demonstration programme on 'propagation and cultivation of orchids (Dendrobium sp.)' and propagating techniques, preparation of potting mixtures, disease management, and nutrient management were imparted to the SHGs and farmers.

She encouraged the female trainees to take up the orchid business, as it requires less care and management.

Yatetla Longkumer, ATM, also conducted training on 'flowers and foliage drying technology for production of value-added dried flower products' on the same day, where she introduced various techniques for flower preservation, foliage preservation, and handling precautions. 

She emphasised cultivating locally available flowers and appraised all the participants about the necessity of entrepreneurship development among rural women to enhance income generation.

Small gardening tools and winter vegetable seeds were distributed among the trainees on the occasion.

ATMA Botsa: ATMA Botsa block, Kohima, organised a training and field demonstration on nursery bed preparation for winter crops and management practices on August 18 at Seiyhama village.

Neitsizo Zumvü, ATM, the event's resource person, focused on methodology and various procedures to be followed in nursery management as well as before and after transplanting. He deliberated on transplanting time, irrigation, spacing, and sustainable pest management.
