ATMA conducts broccoli, French bean demonstration programmes

DIMAPUR — Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Kobulong block, Mokokchung, carried out a demonstration on the performance trial on broccoli variety saki with a view to introducing an improved variety at Molongkong, Mopungchuket village, on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, the resource person, Temjeninla Longkumer, assistant technology manager (ATM) of ATMA Kobulong block, explained the importance of establishing an effective nursery bed to ensure optimal growth and yield of broccoli, according to an update.

She emphasised the importance of soil preparation, which involves loosening the soil to a depth of 15-20 cm. The advantages and use of seedling trays and solarisation of the nursery bed were also discussed.

The resource person also highlighted the importance of spacing to avoid overcrowding and promote optimal growth, as well as the significance of mulching with straw or dry leaves to conserve soil moisture and prevent weed growth. Additionally, intercultural operations, pest management, and disease management were highlighted.

Later, the farmers participated in the preparation of the nursery bed and the sowing of seeds. They gained hands-on experience and practical knowledge that would help improve their farming practices. In the end, broccoli seeds and seed trays were distributed to the farmers.

Altogether, 10 farmers, along with ATMA officials, attended the demonstration programme.

On the same day, with the aim of encouraging sustainable farming to conserve resources and meet food and nutritional security, ATMA Kobulong block conducted a demonstration on organic production of french beans at Yimchalu village, with C Amongla Jamir, block technology manager (BTM), as the resource person.

In her address, she mentioned that growing French beans not only improves soil conditions but also provides nutritional security and enhances farm income.

The resource person covered various aspects of the package of practices for French beans, including climate requirements, soil requirements, field preparation, seed sowing, nutrient management, water management, weeding, earthing up, and staking, as the variety used is pole type.

Further, common pests, diseases, and their management practices were elaborated. Later, the resource person conducted a field demonstration on land preparation and sowing methods.

At the end of the programme, there was an interactive session. French bean seeds, neem oil, and biofertilisers were distributed to the farmers. Altogether, 10 farmers, along with ATMA staff, attended the programme.
