The Athletics Federation of India held a meeting with Nagaland's district associations and visited the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home on Thursday.

DIMAPUR — As part of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026 in Kohima, an official meeting was convened between the AFI leadership and the district athletics associations of Nagaland on Thursday.
The meeting witnessed the participation of representatives from all district associations across the state, stated an update, adding that the interactive session provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and the exchange of ideas between the national federation and district-level stakeholders.
Key deliberations focused on the restructuring and strengthening of district associations, the need to conduct more regular competitions and meets at the grassroots level, and the expansion of the AFI’s education and certification programmes for coaches and technical officials.
Stress was laid on capacity building, standardisation of practices, and creating a robust pipeline for talent identification and development across Nagaland.

The meeting was addressed by Dr. Lalit Kumar Bhanot, President of the South Asian Athletics Federation; Bahadur Singh, President of the AFI; Adille Sumariwala, Vice President of World Athletics; and Abu Metha, Vice President of the AFI.
The dignitaries highlighted the importance of inclusivity, grassroots engagement, and the role of athletics in fostering national integration and youth development.
In continuation of its commitment to social responsibility, the AFI leadership and delegates also visited the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home as part of the AFI Community Outreach Programme.
During the visit, the delegation interacted with the children and the local community, offering words of encouragement and motivation. Gifts were distributed in a gesture of goodwill.
The outreach initiative was led by renowned sportsperson, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Anju Bobby George, along with a team of athletes and officials.
Coincidentally, it was the 53rd foundation day of the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home on Thursday. Members of the Sunshine Orchestra, a musical initiative mentored by AR Rahman, presented musical performances, and words of appreciation were delivered by Neibanuo, the mother of the orphanage.
