EMN DIMAPUR, AUGUST 26
The Nagaland Garo Tribal Council (NGTC) and the Garo Students' Union (GSU) Nagaland Zone have vehemently condemned the assault on Hector Sangma, the proprietor of Little Daffodils School, Doyapur on August 23 morning at his office during school hours. Hector Sangma is also the president of the Nagaland Garo Tribal Council. The two apex Garo bodies have taken exception to the incident and described it as despicable act by a student on the head of an educational institution. A joint press statement by Budim Momin, Gen Secy of Nagaland Garo Tribal Council (NGTC) and Biblab Dangma, President of Garo Students Union (GSU) said “We also make our stand dear that we would not remain mute spectators but would take serious steps so that such incidences are not repeated in the future.” The two Garo organizations have also requested the police and the authorities concerned to take appropriate action against the erring student so that the cordial relationship between teachers and students is not maligned. As per Hector Sangma's statement, he was physically assaulted by a student of Class 9 named Boto with three or four of his accomplices inside Mr. Sangma's office. According to the press statement, a day earlier Boto was reported to the school authorities by another student from Class 4 to be in possession of gutkhas which is a banned substance. After this, the Class IV student was brutally beaten up by Boto. The assault on Sangma was a direct fallout of that incident since Boto was taken to task by the school authorities for his despicable act. The NGTC and GSUNZ call on all the right thinking citizens and students bodies to condemn such acts on the part of the students as it has resulted in growing distrust between the students and the teachers, the release said. Further, the GSUNZ states that it was forced to intervene because the victim of the assault was the President of the Nagaland Garo Tribal Council and this has made the case even more serious. In an emergency meeting held at the office of the GSUNZ at Purana Bazaar on Augusrt 25, “we have decided to leave no stone unturned to get the assaulters booked under relevant sections of the law,” the release added.
