IMPHAL — Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey attended the launch of the Assam Rifles Women Polo Team at IGAR (South), Mantripukhri, Imphal East, on Monday.

Addressing the gatherings, the governor said Manipuri Polo, also known as Sagol Kangjei, stands as a symbol of the state’s vibrant identity and holds a significant place in the history of the country.

The emergence of the Assam Rifles Women Polo Team is an honour to the glorious past and for creating a brighter, more inclusive future, she asserted.

While sharing her experience in various fields, working for the empowerment of women in India, the governor lauded the Assam Rifles (AR) for taking such a profound step towards empowering women.

By fostering opportunities for women to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields, a powerful message of equality and progress is delivered, she said, adding that women of Manipur have long proven their strength and resilience, and the Assam Rifles Women Polo Team is yet another shining example of their indomitable spirit.

The governor said the event holds particular significance in light of recent events in Manipur, as such occasion can help heal the communities and bring people together towards the path of peace and oneness. She expressed optimism that it will serve as a reminder of the shared love for sports, culture, and the commitment to fostering a better future for Manipur while rededicating towards fostering peace, harmony, and the spirit of Manipuri Polo.

While extending her wishes to the Assam Rifles Women Polo Team, she highlighted the values that define the sport: courage, discipline and camaraderie. She also appreciated AR for their indomitable role in containing the ethnic strife that started in Manipur on May 3, 2023, and initiative in education of children as part of the Centre of Educational Excellence programme.

An exhibition match was played between All Manipur Polo Association women team and Assam Rifles Women Polo team at the event, which was attended by several dignitaries including State Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh; Director General of Assam Rifles, Lt Gen PC Nair; IG, Major Gen Ravroop Singh; and other officers.
