Assam Rifles Invitational Football Cup kicks off in Shillong

Dimapur, March 3 (EMN): The fifth edition of the ‘Assam Rifles Invitational Football Cup was declared open by Lieutenant General Sukhdeep Sangwan, AVSM, SM, Director General Assam Rifles and Riflewoman Ranjana Chanu who has been selected to represent India in second round of AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2020 at the Assam Rifles football ground in Laitkor, Shillong on March 2.

‘Assam Rifles Invitational Football Cup’ was launched in the year 2016 and since then it is being conducted every year to promote the spirit of football in the region, stated an update that was received here on Tuesday.

This year’s edition will witness 16 premier football teams affiliated with Meghalaya Football Association (including Assam Rifles team) battling it out to win the cup.

Teams have been divided into eight groups and matches will be played on a knock out basis. The final match will be played on March 13 with Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma as the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
