DIMAPUR — The Assam Rifles organised a lecture for students of Government Middle School, New Thewati village, Phek, on Wednesday to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use, commemorating No Smoking Day.

According to a press release, the event was held with the aim of educating and empowering young minds to make informed choices regarding their health and well-being.

“The lecture provided students with valuable insight into the dangers of smoking and tobacco consumption,” it read, adding that through interactive discussion, students were equipped with factual information about adverse health effects associated with smoking, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular problems.

The event had the participation of 30 students and three teachers.

Wreath-laying ceremonies

Assam Rifles organised a wreath-laying ceremony in Kohima on Wednesday to remember and honour Rifleman Nandan Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice on March 13, 1961, in Mon District, Nagaland, during an ambush by militants.

A total of four officers, 20 junior commissioned officers (JCOs), and 217 other ranks (ORs) paid their rich tributes to the gallant soldier who made the supreme sacrifice.

On this occasion, the commandant spoke to the braveheart’s family and expressed gratitude.

The Assam Rifles also held a wreath-laying ceremony in Mokokchung on March 13 to honour the fallen hero, Rifleman/General Duty Bachhoo Singh, who made the ultimate sacrifice on March 13, 2001, in Chingmeiro, Manipur, while fighting militants.

A total of five officers, 17 JCOs, and 114 ORs paid tribute to the gallant soldier, it said.
