[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Assam Police tracked “abducted” construction official Maheswar Reddy on Monday, a day after he was reported missing from Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
The police said Reddy, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, was tracked at the Patna railway station at around 3 pm on Monday. They also said that he had faked his abduction.
Reddy is a sub-contractor of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS), which is one of the country’s leading infrastructure development and finance companies. The company has been offered sub-contract by the National Highway Authorities India in the construction of the Lumding-Silchar “Maha Sadak” highway project.
On Sunday, an official of the company had lodged an FIR with the police stating that Reddy had been abducted by some armed miscreants at gunpoint. He said the incident occurred while Reddy was on his way from Lumding in Nagaon district to the construction site Hatikhali on a motorbike. The complainant also said that he was an eyewitness as he was riding pillion. Hatikhali is around 26 km from Lumding.“We had travelled around 14-km when he (Reddy) received a call in his mobile. When we stopped, suddenly the miscreants appeared from nowhere and abducted him (Reddy) at gunpoint,” the complainant said.
But the police rubbished it as “drama” enacted by the duo.
“He was not abducted at all. We managed to track him down both on Sunday and today (Monday). In fact, he called me up from the Patna railway station today afternoon,” Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao, GV Siva Prasad told Eastern Mirror.
“We don’t know as to why he enacted the drama by faking his abduction. We learnt that his work and business were not going on properly,” the SP said.
He said he had asked the official to come back.
“If he comes back, we will examine him to find out as to why he did this,” the SP added.
The purported abduction had sent the police into a tizzy. The district authorities had taken the matter very seriously as was evident from their engaging a large number of security personnel including police commandos to track and rescue the official.
