Assam CM holds meeting with former Karbi militants

- DIPHU — Assam
Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was on a two-day visit to Diphu, Karbi
Anglong district headquarters, held a meeting with the former members of the
six disbanded armed organisations, which signed an MoS tripartite agreement
with the state and central government in 2021.
- The CM arrived here on Thursday to inaugurate several
completed welfare schemes and to distribute kits and materials to supervisors
of WCD department at Diphu Government Boys Higher Secondary School playground.
- On his arrival at Taralangso helipad, he was escorted to
Kajir Ronghangpi Memorial Guest House, where he a meeting with the former
leaders of the armed organisations regarding the full implementation of clauses
of the 2021 peace accord.
- The meeting lasted for more than an hour with sufficient
time given to the former members of armed organisations to place their demands
and grievances.

- It may be mentioned here that on September 4, 2021, six
Karbi armed organisations namely the Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation
Front (KLNLF), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), United
People’s Liberation Army (UPLA) and three factions of Karbi People’s Liberation
Tigers (KPLT) signed a tripartite agreement between central government and state
government for a permanent peaceful settlement.
- Interacting with media persons after the meeting, the CM
stated that a fruitful discussion was held with the former members of six
disbanded armed organisations. He informed that the discussion was held within
the ambit of the Indian constitution for proper implementation of each and
every clause of MoS 2021.
- The CM also informed that the leaders have urged the state
government to give ST status to Karbis living in the plain districts of Assam
as being enjoyed by their Karbi brethren living in the hill districts and to
set-up a welfare council for them.
- He assured that the issues raised by them would be settled
within the next three to four months.
- On the notification to make Assamese as official language,
the CM clarified that the matter would be discussed with Karbi Lammet Amei
(KLA) – Karbi literary body.
- On the setting up of Sainik School and Compressed Biogas
Plant (CBG) in Karbi Anglong, the CM said, “By setting up Sainik School and CBG
plant here and if there are oppositions then what I can say. With tea
plantations, other parts of Assam people have economically developed. Likewise,
if every family plants Napier grass to convert it for biogas fuel then people
will get income. There will not be a single poor person in Karbi Anglong.”
- “Karbi Anglong has sufficient land and if many factories
come up, KAAC will get more revenue. The government is doing it for the benefit
of the people and inspite of that if there are oppositions not to set up a
medical college, cancer institute and Sainik School, then we will stop doing
it,” the CM added.
- On being asked about autonomous state, the CM clarified that
whatever is in Article 244 (A) of the Indian constitution, the state government
has given everything.
- After the meeting at Taralangso, the CM accompanied by
minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, PWD and National Highways and Welfare for
Minorities and Development Department, Nandita Gorlosa; CEM of KAAC Tuliram
Ronghang; MP Amarsing Tisso headed to Diphu town to inaugurate several completed schemes.
