  • DIPHU — Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to preserving and promoting the Karbi community's indigenous faith and cultural heritage.

  • Sarma made this statement after participating in the Karbi Aronbarim Armu Chingrum Ameipi (KAACA) 2.0 event at the Karbi People’s Hall in Taralangso in Diphu on April 18, which drew over one lakh people.

  • During the event, hundreds of Kurusar (priest) partook in the invocation prayer 'Horbong Arnam kepu' at the same time by holding bottle gourd filled with rice beer, which was also joined by guests including KAAC chief executive member, Tuliram Ronghang, and others dignitaries.

  • Addressing the gathering on the theme “Nim Isi, Ning Isi” (one religion, one identity), Sarma highlighted the importance of safeguarding the Karbi people's cultural and spiritual legacy from external influences. He stressed the need to pass the traditions to younger generations, ensuring they grow up with a strong understanding of their heritage.

  • To support the mission, Sarma announced to construct Rongker sheds in every Karbi village, facilitating religious and cultural practices.

  • Sarma also announced INR 10 crore for establishing a theological centre under Aronbarim Chingrum Amei, which would help organise events like KAACA.

  • Additionally, each priest would receive INR 10,000 as one-time financial assistance to support their role in preserving the community's faith.

  • The chief minister also mentioned creation of a separate department of Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture to preserve the indigenous faith. He also invited the Karbi community to perform their traditional dance at Guwahati's Sarusajai Stadium, providing a platform to showcase their heritage to a broader audience.

  • Earlier, Sarma met with local organisation representatives at the Kajir Ronghangpi Guest House in Taralangso to discuss the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, aimed at enhancing autonomy for Sixth Schedule areas in the northeast.

  • While most regions have given their consent, Tripura's recommendations are pending, delaying the bill's introduction in Parliament. Sarma expressed optimism about its tabling in the upcoming session.

  • Addressing media persons, Sarma assured that Karbi communities in Assam's plains districts, recognised as Scheduled Tribes (Hills), would receive ST (Hills) caste certificates upon obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. He also announced plans to introduce a bill forming the Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council in September to support Karbi people living in the plains district of Assam.
