Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today convened a high level review meeting with Chief Secretary, Commissioners and secretaries of various departments on issues of revenue leakage and to sort out modalities to curb the menace.
Tuki during the meeting reiterated the government’s intention to contain revenue pilferage, a statement from the CMO said.
“Despite man and machinery in place, revenue leakage is rampant, which is hampering the development process of the state,” Tuki observed and said the existing monitoring system responsible for checking the pilferage needed to be strengthened by creating monitoring wings.
He called for strengthening the entry check gates manned by the departments of Tax and Excise, Geology and Mining, Environment and Forest and the Police to ensure that no goods vehicle was allowed to pass without proof of taxes paid.
“The forest guards or the police may be authorised to check the documents related to tax or royalty,” Tuki said.
He ordered for increase in the frequency of surprise checks at the entry-exit gates and other areas of revenue generation by a mobile squad, the statement said. The Chief Minister appealed the people to help the government in its endeavour by reporting acts of revenue pilferage and announced they would be rewarded for it.
He further directed constitution of a high level committee headed by Development Commissioner-Finance as chairman with Secretary Finance as member secretary to chalk out a comprehensive plan to contain the burgeoning issue.
The committee would study the reasons behind the leakages, zero down on those involved in the pilferage and suggest stern actions against them, the statement said.
The team would also make surprise checks and provide monthly reports to the government.
Tuki directed to constitute district-level committees to ensure check of revenue leakages in the districts, the statement added.
