AR clarifies on August 9 ‘assault’ incident in Kohima
DIMAPUR — The Assam Rifles (AR) has termed as “unfortunate” the August 9 incident in Kohima where the president of the Angami Students’ Union was allegedly assaulted by a soldier of the AR.
In a clarification, the PRO, HQ IGAR (North) said that according to preliminary investigations, the soldier, while on sentry duty, noticed a car parked on the road in close proximity to the Assam Rifles camp.
“Given the heightened security ahead of the Independence Day, the sentry who was oblivious to the identity of the driver, approached the vehicle.

“Subsequently an argument ensued between the soldier and the president of the Angami Students’ Union regarding the vehicle’s parking in a restricted area,” it said.
Assuring the people of Kohima that the “regrettable incident” has been taken cognisance of, the AR went on to inform that it has already initiated an investigation into the incident.
Further, the Assam Rifles is actively engaging with the civil administration, Angami Public Organisation, Angami Youth Organisation and Angami Students’ Union on the issue, it added.
