THE troops of 23 Assam Rifles along with two representatives from Nagaland Police launched an operation in Tuensang town in the early hours on August 26 and apprehended 10 NSCN (KK) and four NSCN (K) cadres along with a huge quantity of arms, ammunition, explosives and incriminating documents. The operation was launched basing on specific intelligence input regarding presence of armed UGs in Tuensang town who were planning to cause disturbance in the general area in view of the by-election to Noksen Assembly constituency scheduled for September 4, the PRO, IGAR (N), said in a release today.
A total of 11 weapons, 337 rounds of ammunition and Rs 1.66 lakh fake currency notes besides a large quantity of other warlike stores such radio sets and tax collection receipts etc were recovered from the apprehended cadres. The fake currency notes worth Rs 1.66 lakh were recovered from NSCN (KK) cadres, the release said,
The defence release said, as per its information, the NSCN (KK) cadres under Tuensang district commander ‘ss’ Maj Omnang Chang and the NSCN (K) cadres under Chang Region chairman Imlongnukshi Chang were involved in extortion, illegal tax collection and recruitment of youth in Tuensang district.
The release said the arrest of the cadres dealt a huge blow to the two factions who were trying to strengthen their position in the region. This also preempted the alleged plans of the two factions to disrupt the preparations for the forthcoming by-election in Noksen A/C.
“The proactive operation launched by the battalion in view of the scheduled by-election to the Noksen Assembly constituency has averted the possibility of likely IFC/IFK between the factions,” the defence release stated.
It further said the recovery of fake currency notes worth Rs 1.66 lakh from NSCN (KK) is indeed a matter of serious concern and needs to be further investigated.
