Ao student body declares non-cooperation with Indian armed forces
MOKOKCHUNG — Condemning the extension of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in Nagaland by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has declared ‘non-cooperation’ with the Indian armed forces.
The AKM made the declaration in concurrence with a directive issued by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).
In a press release on Thursday, the AKM, which is the apex body of the Ao student community, said that the continued enforcement of AFSPA has severely impacted the lives of the Naga people, infringing upon their fundamental rights and freedom.
The draconian nature of this law has often led to human rights violation and created an atmosphere of fear and distrust within our communities, it said.
Recalling the 2021 Oting incident in Mon district, it urged the government of India to repeal the ‘oppressive’ law in Nagaland without any further delay.
It is imperative that the government honours the rights and freedom of all citizens and restores a sense of normalcy and security in the region, the AKM stated.
It is crucial for the authorities to address these issues swiftly to ensure the protection and well-being of the people of Nagaland, it added.
