[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he thinking community of the North East region ought to ponder over the comment of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) that very soon a Bangladeshi will become the chief minister of Assam. The contention of AASU is that the population of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in Assam is fast ballooning and today these people are dominating in the voter lists of the state in various pockets. AASU also expressed its apprehension that the indigenous population of Assam is bound to be annihilated if drastic measures are not taken up on war footing to check the continuous inflow of these illegal immigrants from Bangladesh into Assam. The prediction of the apex students’ body of Assam is based on the change in the pattern of population in the state. AASU also insisted for the protection of the supremacy of indigenous people. It demanded that the government seals the India-Bangladesh border at the earliest, update the National Register of Citizens, give Constitutional safeguards to the indigenous communities and protect the tribal belts and blocks in Assam. AASU also said that it had been vocal on the sealing of the border since illegal migration and the infiltration of ‘jehadi elements posed a serious threat to the locals and to the country’.Well, it will be a big threat to the indigenous population of not only Assam but also to the whole populace of the North East region in the event of Assam being flooded with these immigrants from Bangladesh. Even these days the spill-over of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from Assam are entering Nagaland in large number. From Nagaland these immigrants head for Manipur. This fact came to the knowledge of the people during the drive carried out by those NGOs pushing for Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Manipur. Bangladeshi immigrants come to Manipur as labourers. They would not possess needed documents. They cannot speak Hindi properly. When interrogated these people would first say they are Indians from Assam. Hasher interrogation by police and NGOs compelled these people to reveal the truth. Most of them are from Sylhet areas of Bangladesh.
One more point the AASU has been saying is that ‘jehadi elements have posed a serious threat to the locals and to the country’ as these elements come along with the illegal immigrants. According to the apex students’ body of Assam, if the activities of al-Qaeda and jehadi elements go on like this, the situation in Assam will be more dangerous than that of Jammu & Kashmir.
Seeing this grim development the concerned authorities should act immediately.
