DIMAPUR — The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has demanded stricter enforcement of Inner Line Permit (ILP) regulations in Kohima district, alleging that the “lackadaisical action” of the district administration has led to an influx of illegal immigrants.

In a letter submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, the ASU expressed alarm over the situation and urged immediate action. The union revealed it conducted a “vigil check” on September 11, detecting “at least 8 illegal immigrants and hundreds with no valid permit.”

These individuals were reported to law enforcement and are currently in custody at the South Police Station in Kohima, it said.

“Furthermore, we implore upon the district administration to effectively implement the ILP regulations and for which act, the Angami Students’ Union shall remain vigilant”, the letter stated.

In a separate public appeal, the ASU voiced concerns over the impact of illegal immigration on the social fabric and security of Nagaland, particularly in Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts. While emphasising the importance of peaceful coexistence among communities, the union stressed the need to uphold regulations protecting the interests of indigenous inhabitants.

The ASU also declared its support for the Naga Students’ Federation’s demand for stricter ILP implementation across all districts of the state.

Additionally, it called upon citizens, landlords, businesses, hotels, and guarantors to be vigilant and report any individuals residing within Angami areas without proper ILP documentation.

“Any individual executing works apart from the permitted purpose of work/visit and residing with invalid permit should be immediately reported to the district administration or the office of the Angami Students’ Union,” it added.

Pledging to continue monitoring the situation, the union urged the district administration to take concrete steps to address the issue.
