DIMAPUR — Despite government assurances regarding the availability of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the public has recently begun to feel the pinch of alleged black marketing by unscrupulous elements who are reportedly escalating prices.
The artificial shortage of LPG comes amid the ongoing war between Iran on one side and Israel and the United States on the other.
Speaking to Eastern Mirror, residents said that LPG cylinders are being sold in the black market for INR 1200–1300 in Niuland district.
Due to the purported shortage in supply, consumers are reportedly required to book cylinders in advance.
Similarly, in Dimapur, people said that they are paying around INR 1200 per LPG cylinder following claims of supply shortages.

It may be noted that under normal circumstances an LPG cylinder costs INR 911 in Dimapur, inclusive of delivery charges.
Meanwhile, in an interaction with a news channel, SDO (Civil) Dimapur Wiridin appealed to the public not to panic, stating that there is sufficient stock of LPG.
He also urged retailers, stockists and dealers not to create artificial shortages, cautioning that defaulters would be booked and strict action initiated.
He further informed that a review meeting on the availability of LPG and other petroleum products in the state was held in Kohima on March 12. A meeting with all stakeholders will also be convened soon.
The department of Food and Civil Supplies on Thursday also informed that there is sufficient domestic LPG stock in the state and warned against panic buying or hoarding, which could create artificial scarcity.
The department cautioned distributors, retailers and individuals that black marketing, overpricing, or unauthorised sale of domestic LPG is illegal and punishable under relevant provisions of law, adding that strict action would be taken against those involved in such activities.
