DIMAPUR — American chip maker, AMD, has unveiled an upgraded version of its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology, known as FSR 3. This update introduces advanced features, including frame generation, to enhance the gaming experience for enthusiasts.
Unlike FSR 2, the standout feature in FSR 3 is its integration of frame generation technology. It utilises an enhanced version of AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) 2 optical flow technology and temporal game data to create additional high-quality frames.
These frames can significantly boost framerates, potentially doubling performance in demanding scenarios like 4K gaming with ray tracing or CPU-intensive situations, the company claimed.
During FSR 3 development, minimising the impact of frame generation on the in-game UI was essential, the company said. To achieve this, AMD integrated UI processing as a core part of the solution, preventing interference with the in-game interface.
FSR 3 also includes an updated version of the temporal upscaling technology from FSR 2, which seamlessly combines with the new frame generation tech. Additionally, the "Native AA" quality mode allows users to benefit from FSR's anti-aliasing and sharpening without upscaling, improving image quality beyond native resolution.
According to AMD, the combination of frame generation and super-resolution upscaling in FSR 3 enables previously unattainable framerates in demanding games. Users can adjust image quality and performance using familiar FSR 3 upscaling modes like "Quality" and "Performance."
The company also said that latency reduction was a significant aspect of FSR 3. It ensures responsive gaming experiences while utilising frame generation. For lower latency, it's recommended to use FSR 3 with frame rates of 60 FPS or higher, the company said.
AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series graphics card users can enhance their experience with AMD Radeon Anti-Lag+ technology, an upcoming feature in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. This tech reduces latency in supported games, including FSR 3 games like Forspoken. AMD Radeon RX 6000 series or lower graphics card users can rely on Anti-Lag for latency reduction.
Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum are expected to be the first games to support AMD FSR 3 in early fall. A lineup of ten more games is anticipated to adopt FSR 3, with this list expected to grow over time.
