DIMAPUR — Serious allegations of misconduct and corruption have surfaced against police personnel of East Police Station in Dimapur following claims that a recovered stolen mobile phone case was allegedly “settled” through unofficial payments, bypassing due legal process.
According to a press statement issued by the Dimapur Rengma Youth Organisation (DRYO), the incident dates back to October last year, when a young woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) after losing her mobile phone.
The organisation claimed that after a so-called preliminary examination, the police allegedly failed to take further action or update the complainant.
The statement alleged that the victim later traced the phone herself with assistance from friends and family. The device was reportedly found in the possession of a road labourer, who claimed to have purchased it for INR 2,500 from another individual.

The DRYO further alleged that police personnel later traced the phone to the labourer and demanded INR 19,000, purportedly to be paid to the original owner.
After negotiations, the amount was allegedly reduced to INR 12,000, which the labourer claimed to have paid.
However, the organisation claimed that the phone was allowed to remain with the labourer, while the money was neither returned to the complainant nor was she informed of any settlement, after which the case was allegedly closed.
Describing the incident as deeply disturbing, the DRYO questioned the integrity of law enforcement mechanisms and raised concerns over transparency in handling FIRs and recovered property.
The organisation demanded an immediate independent inquiry into the conduct of the cops involved, strict disciplinary and legal action against those found guilty, and the establishment of accountability mechanisms to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
